Waymaker Wednesday: Women in LegalTech – Meet Tanya Mohta

Tanya Mohta is a commercial contracts lawyer working at the intersection of contracting, legal technology, and digital transformation. Currently an Assistant Legal Counsel at HSBC, she supports the development of AI-driven contract automation tools, including prompt engineering, workflow testing, and feature evaluation. Alongside this, she advises procurement teams on SaaS contracting structures, digital licensing, IP and data risk, and conducts post-execution contract risk assessments and vendor dispute reviews. She has also designed data-tracking frameworks to automate team metrics and improve operational visibility.

Prior to HSBC, Tanya was part of Unilever’s Smarter Contracting Team, where she led procurement contracting for the MENA region and played a key role in CLM implementation across 40+ jurisdictions, including workflow mapping, UX design, template standardisation, sandbox testing, and stakeholder training.

With eight years of experience in SaaS agreements, MSAs, SOWs, and complex vendor arrangements, Tanya brings a strong ability to translate commercial legal workflows into scalable, tech-enabled solutions.

Here’s a peek into her world:

1. What inspired you to join the Women in LegalTech community?

I was already exploring LegalTech quite actively and was looking for a safe space to discuss the common hurdles I face while pitching or implementing tech. That’s how I came across the Women in LegalTech community, and it immediately felt like the right place to learn and share. I have been fortunate to grow in this space surrounded by strong women with clear vision and real implementation journeys, so being part of this network feels like a natural extension of my own path.

2. If you could solve one problem in the legal world (or beyond) with technology, what would it be?

I would love to reduce the time lawyers spend on repetitive operational or administrative work so they can focus more on strategy and real problem-solving. Beyond reviewing and researching, lawyers spend hours on MI reporting, tracking matters, and billing. Much of this can be streamlined or automated, allowing lawyers to focus their energy on higher-value thinking and impact.

3. What’s one book, podcast, or resource that’s made a big impact on how you think about work or life?

Nice Girls Don’t Get the Corner Office by Lois P. Frankel. The book reshaped how I think about confidence, visibility, and navigating corporate spaces as a woman. When I first read it, I assumed I was doing fine, only to realise I was subconsciously making many of the mistakes it highlights. It helped me understand that confidence and respect truly start from within.

4. Outside of work, what’s something you’re passionate about or love spending time on?

I love travelling. I am definitely more of a beach person than a mountain person and am constantly planning my next beach holiday. On a daily basis, I am serious about my coffee. I start my day with a good cup and will happily find any excuse to meet someone over great coffee.

5. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received as a woman in your career journey?

Most growth happens outside your comfort zone.

Whenever I feel myself settling into one, I consciously shake things up, whether that is signing up for a course or taking on new responsibilities. Staying challenged has been key to building my confidence.

6. If you weren’t working in Law/LegalTech, what’s another path you could totally see yourself in?

Probably something at the intersection of design, business, and people, maybe fashion design or even wedding planning. I enjoy building ideas and experiences from scratch.

Tanya’s journey reflects how commercial contracting and legal technology can work together to drive smarter, more scalable legal operations. She continues to focus on building practical, AI-enabled solutions that simplify complexity and strengthen contracting workflows.
