Waymaker Wednesday: Women in LegalTech – Meet Krimul Malhotra

Krimul Malhotra is a tech-forward lawyer working at the intersection of intellectual property, technology, and innovation. She currently serves as Special Products Lead at August, where she focuses on building and refining legal-tech solutions that integrate AI into real-world legal and compliance workflows.

Krimul began her career in tech transactions at Wipro, working on cross-border deals, SaaS, and licensing agreements, before pursuing an LL.M. in Competition, Innovation & Information Law at NYU, where she deepened her focus on IP, AI, and platform regulation. Thereafter, she passed the New York bar examination and got certified to practice in the State of New York. She has also been actively engaged with global IP and technology law communities, staying closely aligned with the evolving legal-tech landscape.

Her work is driven by a focus on translating complex legal frameworks into practical, scalable solutions at the intersection of law and emerging technology.

Here’s a peek into her world:

1. What inspired you to join the Women in LegalTech community?

There’s something uniquely energising about women building things. When women step into tech and start creating, it reflects a kind of agency and independence that we’ve always aspired to have, and seeing that grow within the legal industry feels especially meaningful.

2. If you could solve one problem in the legal world (or beyond) with technology, what would it be?

Simplifying the actual business of law and this is something close to what we work on at August every day. I think the conversation around AI in law has gotten a little stuck in an existential debate about whether AI will replace lawyers, when the more urgent and practical question is: where can we meaningfully reduce friction? Administrative tasks, baseline research, structured analysis, first-draft documents, these are areas where technology can genuinely give lawyers their time back. The goal isn’t to replace human judgment; it’s to make space for more of it.

3. What’s one book, podcast, or resource that’s made a big impact on how you think about work or life?

This might be unexpected, but Rudyard Kipling’s poem “If”. I first read it as a teenager and it quietly became a lens through which I started to understand what it means to stay grounded under pressure, to keep going without losing perspective, and to hold yourself to a standard that isn’t dependent on external validation. It’s not a business book or a productivity framework, but I think it shaped my character in ways that no career resource has quite matched since.

4. Outside of work, what’s something you’re passionate about or love spending time on?

Reading, cooking, and building an active lifestyle, in whatever order the day allows!

5. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received as a woman in your career journey?

It came from my grandmother, who was remarkably career-oriented for her generation. She always said: be a “why not” person. Don’t question your ability to do something until you’ve genuinely given it a shot. That’s shaped how I approach change. I’ve never really been closed off to it. Change has been the constant across moving countries, transitioning from law into legaltech, navigating new industries. Leaning into it rather than resisting it has been one of the best things I’ve done.

6. If you weren’t working in Law/LegalTech, what’s another path you could totally see yourself in?

Honestly? Something in customer success or sales. I’ve realised I genuinely enjoy talking about things I care about and helping people see the value in them. Journalism is the other one that’s always had a quiet pull. At some point it felt like a parallel life I could have lived.

Krimul’s journey reflects how legal expertise and product thinking can come together to shape practical, tech-enabled solutions. She continues to explore how AI and innovation can make legal systems more efficient, scalable, and aligned with real-world needs.
