Waymaker Wednesday: Women in LegalTech – Meet Sushmita Das

This week in our Waymaker Wednesday series, we’re spotlighting Sushmita Das, Senior Director – Technology Consulting at FTI Consulting, India. With over 18 years of experience in digital risk and compliance advisory, Sushmita has worked across industries including FMCG, IT/ITES, healthcare, insurance, e-commerce, banking, and media.

At FTI, she leads business development and go-to-market strategy in India, focusing on building trusted partnerships, localizing global solutions, and driving innovation through cross-segment collaboration. Her journey reflects not only expertise in strategy and compliance but also a passion for innovation, client solutioning, and creating meaningful connections along the way.

As an active voice in the Women in LegalTech community under ILTN, Sushmita exemplifies what it means to be a true waymaker, blending leadership, technology, and inclusive growth to shape the future of legal innovation.

1. What inspired you to join the Women in LegalTech community?

I’ve seen a lot of transformation happening in the business world driven by legal frameworks. In today’s digital age, where fraud is rampant, compliance and regulation are crucial. I felt there was a need for an inclusive community that highlights and amplifies the voices of women experts, alongside their male allies, in shaping compliance and governance. Their journeys and expertise deserve recognition. By contributing to this space, I hope to inspire young lawyers and strengthen inclusivity in such a transformative era.

2. If you could solve one problem in the legal world (or beyond) with technology, what would it be?

LegalTech is already solving many problems, from enabling better decisions with AI to creating innovative compliance tools. But the key challenge is ensuring solutions are effective, user-friendly, and don’t create new problems. I would focus on building systems that prevent fraud, ensure compliance, and reduce revenue leakages—while being practical to implement. Any solution must balance innovation with governance and checks to truly help businesses and regulators alike.

3. What’s one book, podcast, or resource that’s made a big impact on how you think about work or life?

I’ve come across many resources, but recently Ikigai resonated with me. As a woman balancing multiple roles—mother, wife, professional leader—it reminded me of the importance of self-care, work-life balance, and living with purpose. It hasn’t magically changed my life, but it has helped me focus more on wellness, mental health, and embracing my journey without being too hard on myself.

4. Outside of work, what’s something you’re passionate about or love spending time on?

I love spending time with my 11-year-old daughter, who is deeply into Bharatanatyam, fine arts, sculpture, and storytelling. Watching her explore these creative outlets is inspiring, and I learn a lot from her. Arts, music, and storytelling refresh me and align with my own background in humanities and law, so supporting her passions also resonates deeply with me.

5. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received as a woman in your career journey?

One of the best pieces of advice I’ve received is to be unapologetic and confident about my choices. Carry yourself with impact and make sure your work touches and uplifts others. Leadership is not just about personal success, but about enabling growth in those around you. That perspective has shaped me not only as a woman but as a leader.

6. If you weren’t working in law/legaltech, what’s another path you could totally see yourself in?

If not legal tech, I would have been a career coach or teacher. Sharing experiences, guiding people, and giving them a sense of direction feels very natural to me. In fact, I still aspire to be a life coach someday, because I believe the lessons I’ve learned should be passed on to help others while also continuing my own growth.

Sushmita’s journey shows how innovation and inclusion can go hand in hand in transforming legal and tech spaces. She continues to inspire as a leader who builds not just strategies, but communities.
