Waymaker Wednesday: Women in LegalTech – Meet Carol Jayan Philip

Carol Jayan Philip currently serves as the Lead – Legal Operations at CADRE ODR, where she works at the intersection of dispute resolution, process design, and operational strategy. In this role, she focuses on strengthening legal workflows, improving efficiency, and supporting the scalable delivery of online dispute resolution services. Her work reflects a strong understanding of how structured processes and legal systems can be optimized for real-world impact.

Her professional journey is grounded in diverse experiences across litigation, intellectual property, research, and community-driven legal initiatives. Through internships and project roles, she developed skills in legal research, trademark procedures, client engagement, workshop facilitation, stakeholder coordination, program administration, and grassroots legal literacy efforts. These early experiences helped build her foundation in analytical thinking, communication, and structured problem-solving—skills she now applies within legal operations and dispute resolution systems.

Her trajectory reflects a growing focus on making legal processes more accessible, organized, and impact-driven.

Here’s a peek into her world:

1. What inspired you to join the Women in LegalTech community?

I was looking for conversations that weren’t just theoretical, but rooted in lived experiences—women who see the world the way I do and are building practical, tech-enabled solutions to real problems. Being part of a community that values mentorship, shared learning, and honest dialogue has been incredibly reassuring. It’s a constant reminder that there is no fixed mold—and with the right support system, anything truly is possible.

2. If you could solve one problem in the legal world (or beyond) with technology, what would it be?

If I could solve one problem using technology, it would be improving legal literacy at the grassroots level—especially in our country. While this challenge is often discussed, its impact cannot be overstated. Access to justice begins with understanding rights, processes, and remedies, yet for many, legal systems still feel distant and intimidating. Thoughtfully designed technology can help bridge this gap by simplifying information, increasing accessibility, and empowering people to engage with the law confidently and meaningfully.

3. What’s one book, podcast, or resource that’s made a big impact on how you think about work or life?

Relentless is a book that has significantly shaped how I think about work, discipline, and growth. It was gifted to our team by our founders (CADRE ODR), Ms. Kanchan Gupta and Mr. Rajneesh Jaswal, which made the learnings feel even more meaningful. The book reinforced the importance of consistency over motivation - showing up even on difficult days and taking ownership of outcomes. Its lessons on focus, accountability, and resilience have stayed with me well beyond the workplace.

4. Outside of work, what’s something you’re passionate about or love spending time on?

Music and singing are my happy place. No matter how demanding things get, music helps me reset, reconnect, and slow down. It’s where I feel most like myself - and I’ll be trying my hand at Jive soon too

5. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received as a woman in your career journey?

I’ll share two that have stayed with me:

1. Women often see the world differently and that perspective is not a limitation, it’s a superpower.

2. There will be moments when you have to work twice as hard to be heard, but progress matters more than perfection. Showing up consistently, learning along the way, and trusting your instincts can take you further than waiting for the “perfect” moment.

6. If you weren’t working in Law/LegalTech, what’s another path you could totally see yourself in?

If not Law or LegalTech, I could see myself working in a people-centric, innovation-driven space, perhaps in education, community building, or organizational development. I enjoy working closely with people, learning continuously, and contributing to environments where ideas can grow into meaningful, real-world impact.

Her journey reflects how strong legal foundations, when combined with operational thinking, can improve how justice systems function. She continues to focus on building processes that make dispute resolution more efficient and accessible.
